Can’t I just offset my carbon emissions?
Some companies offer to offset your carbon emissions by planting trees (mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere by fixing the carbon in photosynthesis) or cutting carbon emissions elsewhere by introducing energy saving measures. There are a few problems with this. Firstly, our activities emit carbon immediately, where as planting trees will take much longer to re-absorb the same amount of CO2 also trees will only mop up carbon whilst they are growing, mature (fully grown trees have little effect on net carbon reduction). Carbon offsetting can be useful as an addition, but not an alternative to cutting our own energy emissions. This site tackles the more immediate issue of cutting our carbon emissions now!
Help cut carbon emissions by supporting the 10:10 campaign
The 10:10 campaign asks individuals, businesses and organisations to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. The hope is that thousands of individuals and businesses get involved and send a powerful message to politicians that we want tougher action against climate change.
Cutting 10% of our carbon emissions in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it’s an achievable one, energy-saving tips will help by giving you practical tips on how to save your 10%.

What is a carbon footprint?
Carbon footprint is a fairly new term used to describe the impact on the environment as a result of your energy use. Everything we do, from cooking to travelling uses energy, and a waste product of producing that energy is Carbon Dioxide gas.
Don’t we need carbon dioxide?
- Yes, we do. Carbon dioxide is an essential part of our environment. It is used by plants to make food via photosynthesis, providing us with food and a constant supply of oxygen to breathe. Carbon dioxide also acts as a greenhouse gas, absorbing heat energy from the sun. Without carbon dioxide, the earth would be too cold for life to exist. The problem is that we are producing too much of it, this is causing the temperature of the earth to increase.
